The Value in Trees

Abstract

Trees have four major qualities that attribute to their value.

Like most other plants trees can produce oxygen at about an equal rate to how they reduce carbon. Photosynthesis causes a unique circumstance where air literally passes through leaves. In that process the leaves filter out all they want, like carbon, and discard the rest onto the leaf. So when the leaf falls off or when it rains the pollution that was once in the air ends up on the ground. Some trees are better at this than others but the idea is that they all provide cleaner air by using smaller land space.

Land is valuable and can be washed away in an instant. Tree roots are as vast as their limbs some root systems are bigger than others. These tree roots need to absorb water, to do so they have to gather the water and then sort through it to absorb what they need. In this process and related processes the tree forces the water to pass through it therein cleaning the water and providing stability to soil.

In urban areas trees can provide many different literal values. Property value in most circumstances can increase by 15% whenever the property has mature trees on the land. Cities have saved thousands of dollars in street repairs by a trees natural means of protecting pavement from harmful sun rays. In the city of Portland Oregon “each year Portland's trees intercept half a billion gallons of storm water to save more than $11 million in storm water management costs.” (Friends of Trees) All of these financial values are noticed every day according to the city of Portland each dollar spent on a tree returns at a value of $3.60. A similar value is noticed in all urban areas around the world.

Property owners can find value in a tree every day. From noise reduction of traffic in the cities to dust reduction in the desert trees can increase any properties value. The most common reason for plant a tree is for protection for all of the noise, dust and prying eyes.

We can all increase the amount of trees in the world by plant some trees on our properties to supporting tree friendly projects. The primary value in trees lies in their ability to hinder erosion and weathering. Without trees people could face inconceivable losses due to many natural disasters. From flooding to heat waves trees show their value to all of us whenever we are in need of cover.
